The Akron Beacon Journal, Ohio's only four-time Pulitzer
Prize-winning newspaper, serves readers in Summit, Portage, Stark, Medina and
Wayne counties. Founded in 1839 as the Summit Beacon, the newspaper took its
current name when the Summit Beacon merged with the Akron Journal in
1897.
Today's Beacon Journal delivers daily news and information in
print, online at Ohio.com.The largest newspaper of Canada-based Black Press
Ltd., the Akron Beacon Journal operates under Sound Publishing Holdings Inc.,
the parent company's Washington-based U.S. subsidiary.
From 1903 to 1974, the Akron Beacon Journal was owned by Knight
Newspapers, a family-owned journalistic dynasty that spanned six decades, three
wars and 10 presidents. Knight Newspapers merged with Ridder Publications in
1974 to become Knight Ridder, a publicly traded corporation. The Knight Ridder
era ended in 2006 with the sale of the corporation to McClatchy Co., which
subsequently sold the Akron Beacon Journal to Black Press Ltd.
On Aug. 7, 2006, Edward R. Moss became the ninth publisher of the Akron Beacon
Journal. The newspaper executive had been vice president of sales and marketing
at Media General and publisher at newspapers in Pennsylvania, Louisiana,
California and Michigan. He was appointed by David Black, president of Black
Press Ltd. of Canada, a privately held company that owns and operates 115
newspapers in western Canada and the states of Washington, Hawaii and Ohio.
