software may treat the auto-generated e-mail as a spam e-mail and block it. If
you are a hotmail user, please check your junk mail folder. For other users,
please check your similar folder. If you still can’t get the activation email,
we suggest that you try using another e-mail account, such as a yahoo e-mail

(SSL) technology that automatically steps up to 128-bit encryption (the
strongest encryption available) to keep your credit card information safe. This
means that our security channel will extend 128-bit encryption to you, even if
you use browsers (IE 4.X or Netscape 4.06 and later) limited to 40-bit or
56-bit encryption capabilities.

What is security ID of a credit card?
The security ID is used to verify that you have possession of the
credit card you are attempting to use. For American Express customers, the
security ID is a 4-digit, non-embossed number printed above your account number
on the face of your card. For Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card customers, the
Card ID is a 3-digit number that is printed on the signature strip after the
last four digits of your account number on the back of your card.

What is the difference between
searching online and searching offline using Acrobat’s built in search?
BJD uses PDF format for all the papers. Acrobat Reader, the software
that you use to read PDF documents, has a built in search function that allows
you to search the current PDF document. For BJD papers that allow you to view
offline, one edition is a single PDF file. So you can use Acrobat’s built in
search function to search today’s edition. When you view BJD online, you use a
slightly different BJD version. In this version, each edition is decomposed to
smaller PDF documents to improve online performance. If you use Acrobat’s built
in search, you will only be able to search within that page instead of the
whole edition.

What does “default section” mean? How can I
change my default section?
Default section is the section that will be brought up when you
click a date in the calendar. To change your default section, go to My Account
after log in, choose the section from the dropdown list and click “update”.
Go to top
How can I jump to a section I want?
If the paper has been brought up, click the bookmark icon
on the upper or lower corner of the right side of the paper. If you view
the paper offline, you can also use the bookmark in the left pane. On the
single file downloaded edition, you can either use the bookmark icon, or open
the bookmark tab within Acrobat Reader.

How do I read BJD on Ipad?
To read the BJD on an Ipad, we recommend that you install a third party application called GoodReader. GoodReader allows you to download and unzip zip files either from a web site or from an email attachment. It is available for download from the Apple store for a small fee. After installation, browse to our site using GoodReader's built in browser. Click the arrow button on the calendar page after you log in. You will be prompted to save the file. GoodReader will automatically unzip the file for you after the file is downloaded.

Web and Browser
What is cookie? Why do I need to allow cookie from
BJD site? How do I change my browser settings to allow cookie from BJD site ?
HTTP protocol used for the Web is inherently stateless. There is no
built-in way for a server to know that any two requests are part of the same
user session. A cookie is a piece of information sent by a Web server to a
user's browser. The browser saves the information, and sends it back to the Web
server whenever the browser returns to the Web site. After you sign on to BJD,
our Web server sends out a cookie to your browser which includes your
authentication status. If your browser blocks the cookie, the server will not
know that you have been authenticated and will redirect you to sign in page
again when you try to retrieve a secured page later. Most of the newer version
browsers can be configured to allow cookies of a certain site.
GetNetWise.com site has very detailed instructions on how to control
the cookie settings of most common browsers. You can also find
information in the help menu of your browser.

Are there any hardware or software requirements for
Beacon Journal Digital?
We strongly recommend high-speed Internet access, such as cable
modem, DSL, T1, T3 or Frame-Relay. The faster your connection, the faster your
downloads. Modern web browsers require a significant amount of memory (RAM). We
recommend at least 128MB of installed RAM and a processor speed of at least
233Mhz. To avoid excessive scrolling and panning, we suggest a screen
resolution of 1024 by 768 on a 17-inch monitor. The subscription sign-up
process requires a web browser that uses 128-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
encryption. This is to protect your vital credit card information. The latest
versions of Microsoft® Internet Explorer® and Netscape®Communicator™ offer this
level of security. In order to view Beacon Journal Digital you will also need
Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ 5.1, a free download at
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. The Acrobat® PDFViewer
plug-in must be installed into your web browser’s plug-ins folder. This is
necessary so that your web browser can download and display each page of Beacon
Journal Digital, which is in a Portable Document Format (PDF). If you run the
Acrobat® Reader™ install program after you have installed your preferred web
browser, the installer should automatically configure your web browser to use
Acrobat® Reader™. If you encounter problems configuring your web browser to use
Acrobat® Reader™, Adobe® has an excellent resource explaining this,
step-by-step at http://www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html.

When I am viewing Beacon Journal Digital, each
page takes forever to load. Why is that?
If you are using a dial-up Internet connection, Beacon Journal
Digital may take a prohibitive amount of time to download. We suggest switching
to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that offers a high-speed connection such
as cable modem, DSL, T1, T3 or Frame-Relay. You will notice a significant
improvement in page download times and in your overall web-browsing experience.

I have Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ installed, yet
when I try to view Beacon Journal Digital I receive an error message telling me
that I have “started to download a file of type application/pdf” with options
as to what to do with it. Why?
Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ is not configured properly to work with your
web browser. The Acrobat®PDFViewer plug-in must be installed into your web
browser’s plug-in folder. This is necessary so that your web browser can
download and display each page of Beacon Journal Digital, which is in a
Portable Document Format (PDF). If you run the Acrobat® Reader™ install program
after you have installed your preferred web browser, the installer should
automatically configure your web browser to use Acrobat® Reader™. Acrobat®
Reader™ will NOT function with Internet Explorer® unless you have ActiveX
enabled. If you encounter problems configuring your web browser to use Acrobat®
Reader™, Adobe® has an excellent resource explaining this, step-by- step at
http://www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html.

I have Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ installed, but
the Beacon Journal Digital pages download to my desktop. What am I doing wrong?
This can happen with Microsoft® Windows® under the following
circumstances: When clicking on a link to a PDF file in Microsoft® Internet
Explorer®, a File Download box may appear asking you to specify what to do with
the file. If you select “Open this file from its current location,” Internet
Explorer® will open the file using Acrobat® Reader™ as a helper application. If
you select “Save this file to disk,” the PDF file will be saved to your hard
disk so you can open it later. If you select “Save this file to disk” and
deselect the checkbox beneath it that states “Always ask before opening this
type of file,” PDF files will download to your desktop without opening by
default. Microsoft® recommends leaving the “Always ask before opening this type
of file” option checked.

Why do I get the error “A2.pdf not found” when
I click on a link or try to go to the next page?
This error may have three causes:
1. You may have lost your connection to the Internet. This is less likely with
high-speed access, but can still happen. Check your computer’s connection to
your router or modem. See if you can access other Internet pages.
2. Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ is not configured properly to work with your web
browser. The Acrobat PDFViewer plug-in must be installed into your web
browser’s plug-ins folder.
Reader™, Adobe® has an excellent resource explaining this, step-by-step at
http://www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html.
3. You are not viewing the page within your web browser. If you download the
PDF file and then open it in Acrobat® Reader™, you will not be able to follow
any page links. E-mail links may still function though. Beacon Journal Digital
uses your web browser to retrieve other pages and to connect to the Internet.
That is why each Beacon Journal Digital page should be viewed within your web
browser. When Acrobat® Reader™ installs under Apple® OS X, no browser plug-in
is loaded. Instead, Acrobat® Reader™ configures your web browser to use Reader™
as a helper application. PDF's will open, but some links that are dependent
upon a web browser won’t work. We suggest opening up a “Classic” web browser to
access Beacon Journal Digital from Apple® OS X

Does Beacon Journal Digital work with
WebTV®/MSN® TV?
Not at the present time. WebTV®/MSN® TV receivers do NOT have the

receivers download and store the software necessary to do so. For more

What do the buttons on the Adobe® Acrobat®
Reader™ toolbar do and how can I change them?
The toolbar in
Adobe® Acrobat® Reader™ 6 can be customized to suite your preferences by
clicking view (Windows) or control-clicking (Macintosh) within the toolbar.
This action will display a pop-up menu, similiar to the one shown below, that
allows you to enable or disable the display of button groups in the toolbar. A
checkmark next to a selection means that this button group will be displayed in
the toolbar. Button groups can be moved within the toolbar, shown below, by
clicking and dragging them by the vertical handles on the left of each group.
Hovering your cursor over a button will display a “tooltip” letting you know
what the button does. We have simulated the “tooltip” feature below, which you
can test if you are using a current web browser. The entire toolbar can be
hidden or displayed by using the F8 function key (both Windows and Macintosh).
Further information on the toolbar and shortcut keys can be found under the
Help menu.
